Avoiding the Disabled List: How Physical Therapy Can Help Avoid Baseball Injuries

Baseball is just around the corner with pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training in the next coming weeks! This means that more and more players will suffer from injuries due to not being trained or in shape. Baseball even has a major surgery named after a famous player, Tommy John. A major injury, especially to pitchers, can ruin or even worse, end a career. Many MLB players such as Johan Santana, former New York Mets and current Baltimore Orioles pitcher, has missed the past few seasons because of injuries to their throwing arm. Unfortunately, many pitchers never come back the same player as they were, and both the player and organization suffer from these season-ending injuries.
Nevertheless, physical therapy is a great way to keep your body in shape and maintain superior health.

Endurance, arm strength, leg strength and just about every body part that you can think of are used when playing baseball. Research suggests that sports injuries have increased by 60% over the last decade. This is due to athletes overworking their bodies without taking proper care of them. In baseball, pitchers consistently throw hard with an unnatural range of motion for the human body, which is why there are less injuries for softball pitchers than baseball pitchers. The arm is at risk every single time a pitcher winds up and releases a baseball towards home plate. Therefore, physical therapists will work with athletes in order to make pitchers less susceptible to injury. Speed, flexibility, joint mobility and muscle imbalances are all ways in which physical therapists attempt to stretch the muscles and joints in the body.

The repetitive throwing, running and even swinging can cause so much wear and tear on a body that major league baseball teams have strength and conditioning coaches to ensure their players are less vulnerable to injury. These coaches use physical therapy exercises in order to avoid musculoskeletal, elbow and shoulder injuries. Furthermore, physical therapists will work on a baseball player’s range of motion and mobility when teaching them their stretching and strengthening exercises.

If you are a baseball player, you should highly consider taking the proper precaution of taking care of your body and seeking help from physical therapy. Physical Therapy will help decrease your chance of missing out on games or an entire season due to injury. Your chances of injury will decrease drastically by allowing your body to become used to the range of motion and mobility that comes with playing the game of baseball. So, take out your bats and gloves and get ready to play ball!

The Need For Exercise

If you knew that one simple thing could lower the risk of death by 30% would you do it?

This one simple thing is called exercising!

Did you know that not exercising at all could have worse health outcomes than obesity?

As we all know, exercising has many benefits but what not everyone knows is that not exercising at all can be twice as deadly as obesity. Any exercise is better than none, even going for a walk on your lunch break. A simple exercise can reduce the chances of an early death and keep you healthier than you ever were before. Even those who are thin and seem to be in shape need to exercise to maintain a healthy body just as much as those who are overweight. Putting an end to not exercising at all can save twice as many lives as putting an end to obesity. We need to focus on motivating ourselves to exercise just as much as we motivate those who are obese. Increasing physical activity by just 20 minutes a day not only lowers your risk for an early death but can also make you feel healthier and better about yourself. If you burn 90-110 calories a day, you will be sure to notice a difference in how you feel and how you feel in years to come. Our bones and muscles are made to move and by doing that we keep them healthy. Not only does exercising keep your bones and muscles healthy, it also builds your immune system, increases your mental function, and gives you more energy than you had before. In a much greater sense, exercising reduces your chances of developing diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

With all that being said, it is time to get up and get healthy!

Go Red For Women

Did you know that heart disease is the number one cause of death for women? Luckily, there are ways to know if you are at risk, as well as how to decrease your risk from developing heart disease.

Why you and your children should exercise on a daily basis:

Research has shown that both children and adults need at least 60 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity a day. A lack of daily activity is a major risk factor for developing coronary artery disease. Along with developing coronary artery disease, not exercising can also increase a person’s risk for stroke, obesity, high blood pressure, low cholesterol, and diabetes. Physical activity has benefits psychologically, socially, and physically. If a child is not active when they are young, there is a small chance that they will be active as an adult.

Cholesterol:

Cholesterol is a substance that is fat and soft and found in the blood and all of our cells. Cholesterol is a substance that everyone needs to function on a daily basis. There are two different types of cholesterol, LDL and HDL. LDL is considered the bad cholesterol and overtime can clog your arteries. Going to the doctor and checking your cholesterol is one of the most beneficial ways to make sure your cholesterol is at a good level.

Blood Pressure:

High blood pressure is another level that can be controlled and monitored by seeing your doctor. You can also control your blood pressure by staying active and eating healthy foods.

Diabetes:

Both high cholesterol and blood pressure can increase your risk at developing of developing diabetes, which in turn increases your risk for developing heart disease. Being cautious of what you put into your body and exercising daily will decrease your risk for all of these.

Quit Smoking!

Smoking is a huge factor in developing heart disease. When you quit smoking your risk of heart disease is cut in half.

Smartphone Healthcare Apps

Smartphone users have the world at their fingertips. With new technology in smartphones you can access the World Wide Web at any moment, post something on the social media, take pictures and so much more. There are so many apps on these devices that allow you to do virtually anything. The newest trend on the app stores are diet and nutrition apps. Whether it be recipes, new workouts to try, or tracking your food you ate today, they have it all.

There are has been research to prove whether or not these apps really do help with your diet and weight loss. You have to be really self-motivated and committed to these apps that are giving you the essentials you need in order to stay healthy and active. One popular app is called, “My Fitness Pal.” This app counts all your calories that you intake during the day and helps you keep on track with healthy size portions.

If this app isn’t for you, they have so many more to choose from. Another popular app is called, “Rise.” This app allows you to connect with other people and have private messages between you and your coach. Your coach will tell you how to stay on track, whether or not what you’re eating is good for you and how to portion control. Rise even lets you take a picture of your meal and share it with your coach so they can see exactly what and how much of it you're eating.

Most people enjoy having a personal nutritionist in their back pocket. It beats the price of having to hire one and it beats the hassle. People struggle with food shopping and going out to restaurants, so having these apps cancels out that struggle you always intend to have.

Fall Prevention

This icy, snowing, and sleeting days of winter bring upon some very serious dangers. The risk of falling can be very detrimental to many and extremely dangerous for the elderly. The chances of slipping and falling are more than doubled during these months. There are actions you can take to lessen your risk of injury during the snowy months.

When it is cold and icy out it is not only important to wear water resistant shoes to keep warm and dry, but also, keep you safe. The traction on the bottom of rubber boots is very important to keep you from slipping and falling. As opposed, to wearing shoes with little to no traction this is one of the most important measure to take to help your safety if staying home is not an option.

Be sure to know where you are stepping before exiting a car. If you don’t look where you’re about to step down, it could be extremely dangerous. Quickly stepping down on to a patch of ice could cause you to fall and potentially hit your head, and possibly break something. Only walk on pathways that have been cleanly shoveled and treated with sand or ice. Black ice is harder to see, so avoid any walkway that looks like it has not been treated. When you have to shovel make sure you have a path to walk so you don’t lose your balance.

Allow extra time to get where you need to be so to avoid rushing and and not paying attention to what you are walking on. These falls are injuries you most definitely want to avoid at all costs. So please take the right action to make sure that these incidents don’t happen to you.

How does physical therapy help prevent falls? As you grow older, your leg muscles begin to weaken and you will have more difficulty with balance and walking. Therefore, a physical therapist will help you assess your risk of falling. Your physical therapist will also help your home become less hazardous and safer by showing you secure procedures around your household. Furthermore, there are specific risk factors that your physical therapist can inform you on when it comes to falls. Certain things you do in your everyday routine may be risky, and your therapist will help you decrease your chances of falling by making you aware of them.

Additionally, during your physical therapy visits, your therapist will help you by creating individual exercise routines and balance and walking techniques that will reduce your risk of falling. Your balance and coordination with improve immediately upon entering physical therapist treatment. Your physical therapist will work with you as an individual and see how he can reduce your risk of falling by constructing a plan that is designed to benefit you personally. For some patients, it may just be balance issues, but for others, medication and certain medical conditions will alter your PT plan. Physical therapy is capable to fit everyone’s needs in order to help you live a safer, healthier and easier life.

February Heart Health

Stay heart healthy during the month of February. It is officially heart health awareness month. February is the month of love so why not take care of the source where it all comes from? Heart disease, otherwise known as cardiovascular disease, is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. Cardiovascular disease includes strokes, heart disease and high blood pressure. It disables men and women from working and enjoying day to day activities. This disease has cost the United States billions each year in medications, health care services and the loss of productivity.

Cardiovascular disease affects everyone in different ways. Studies show that the survival rate of people ages 65-74 has decreased, but the number hasn’t changed in people under the age of 65. Unfortunately, studies also show that men are twice more likely than women to die from this disease. Close relatives diagnosed with cardiovascular disease also puts you at a higher risk of eventually getting it. Another factor that comes into play with this disease is your race and ethnicity. Over 40% of African Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease. They are more likely than any other ethnic group to have high blood pressure and develop cardiovascular disease earlier in life.

There are so many preventative measures one can do to help reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Many deaths could have been prevented through adopting a healthier lifestyle. In order to not be overwhelmed all at once, take each day as a new obstacle. Adopt healthier eating habits and a new diet. Adults are expected to have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Get up every day and get active. Whether it’s running around your house cleaning or going on a run at the local park; everything counts.

Yearly checkups with your doctors are extremely important even if you think you are healthy. There are conditions that can be going on for a long time without being noticed. Monitoring your blood pressure regularly is easy to do in order to stay intact with what’s going on in your body. Tobacco use is absolutely frowned upon when trying to dodge cardiovascular disease. Doctors recommend if you’re a smoker to quit, and if you aren’t, don’t start. Also, limit your alcohol use.

There are many ways to end the rise of cardiovascular disease. With these easy steps you will be sure to see a difference in your everyday life. One step at a time, cardiovascular disease can be managed. Take part in February heart health month and spread the word.

How Cardiovascular Exercise Helps Lower Your Blood Pressure

Next month is national heart disease awareness month. This is also a good time to look at your own heart health and what you can do to ameliorate preexisting conditions and prevent any other cardiac problems. It’s no secret that cardiovascular exercise is good for your heart. Your heart is a muscle just like any other, the more it is exercised the stronger it will get. Even the smallest increase in exercise can make a big impact. Start easy with 30 minute walks a few days a week.

People who exercise cut their risk of heart disease in half compared to their non-active counterparts. Of course regular exercise is extremely beneficial for your body as a whole but there are specific benefits to your heart health. Any kind of activity burns calories, which leads to weight loss. By keeping your body at a healthy weight the easier it is on your heart to pump blood and oxygen throughout your body. This lowers your blood pressure by lessening the effort your heart makes in moving the resources around your body. It is very important to keep a healthy blood pressure and not to put any extra strain on your cardiac muscles. Cardiovascular exercise also increases good cholesterol (HDL) and decreases bad cholesterol (LDL), also making it easier for your heart to pump blood and further lowering your blood pressure.

Having a healthy blood pressure puts less strain on your heart and arteries. It takes a few weeks to start lowering your blood pressure so don’t give up too soon! Keeping your heart healthy is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Start slowly, maybe with an exercise partner and challenge each other. Any step towards a healthier lifestyle is a step in the right direction!

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Arthritis, that dreaded household name we all know and hate. Unfortunately this very common inflammatory condition affects 46 million people according to webmd.com. But did you know there are over 100 different types of arthritis? The two most popular types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Although the effect on your joints is similar there are many differences between the two conditions. Osteoarthritis comes from years of wear and tear. There is nothing you can do to avoid this it’s just a part of life. Contrary, rheumatoid arthritis comes from a person’s immune system not working properly. People who are diagnosed as having rheumatoid arthritis are usually disabled within a decade. The best way to prevent the progression is early detection! The sooner you find out you have this, the sooner a plan can be made and treatment introduced.

Because rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease there are many symptoms throughout the body that may not be recognized as RA right off the bat. Some symptoms include unexplained weight loss, morning stiffness, fatigues, low fever, weakness, and loss of appetite. At first these symptoms seem to point to a viral infection but it may not be as it seems. The effect on the joint can be one of the last areas to be affected so early detection is key!

If you are experiencing pain, redness, warmth, swelling and decreased motion in your joints you should speak to your doctor who may refer you to a rheumatologist. There are many treatment options once diagnosis is complete however the sooner the diagnosis the sooner you can try and get some control of your RA.
