Whiplash and its Symptoms

Lateral neck X-ray of whiplash.jpg
Whiplash is associated with sudden motions that move the neck backwards then forwards, like the cracking of a whip. These abrupt actions can cause the over-extension of the neck with additional damage to the muscle, tendons, and even discs of the neck and upper back. Whiplash is most frequently a result of an automobile accident, but can also occur during contact sports activities, accidental falls, or other events where the neck is strained by sudden movement, like a roller coaster.

Symptoms may not develop until 24 hours or more after the initial trauma. Those suffering from whiplash commonly report aches, pains, or reduced range of motion in the neck, upper back, and shoulders. Other symptoms include headaches, a disruption in concentration or sleeping, and the swelling of the neck. Some people encounter the feeling of pins and needles or muscle spasms in their neck, shoulders, and arms.

Whiplash is a common injury that may heal on its own. Always check with a healthcare professional to ensure additional damage of the spine did not occur. For immediate treatment after the injury, ice or cold packs can be applied to your neck and shoulders for 15-20 minutes to reduce any pain or swelling that may occur. Repeat every hour for the first 2-3 days following the injury. Aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen are over-the-counter pain medications that may assist with reducing pain or swelling; consult with your physician before beginning any regimen. Physical therapists provide treatment that includes ice and/or heat therapy, manual therapy, and can show you exercise that will help stretch and strengthen your neck to minimize symptoms of whiplash.

How to Find the Right Physical Therapist

Today, it is so easy to find a physical therapist. You can ask for a doctor referral, or even find one on the internet. But, the most difficult part as a patient is finding the right physical therapist out of the hundreds that are practicing. This challenge can be difficult; however, there are several influencing factors that patients make when selecting a physical therapist, which guides their decision making.
Since so many people are now finding their doctors and physical therapists online, it is very important that one’s website is up to date and easy to navigate through. If your office location, as well as hours and insurance information are not clearly posted on the webpage, then people will not even consider your practice and will immediate try and Google another practice.

Everybody knows that there are simply not enough hours in the day. People have such busy schedules, so when looking for a physical therapist, people try to seek one out that has flexible office hours. Since most people work during the week, it is often ideal for them to have a physical therapist that has weekend office hours.

Lastly, they look for someone who is compassionate and friendly. If you come across as caring and sympathetic towards their needs, then they will be much more pleased with your services, and will recommend you in the future. This refers to the kindness of the front desk staff to the demeanor of the physical therapists.

If you follow all of these suggestions, you will see that your practice will be much improved, and your number of patients will soar.

Healthy Holiday Alternatives

During the holiday season, we all look forward to those delicious holiday meals, but dread putting on the extra weight that comes with them. Just because there are tons of meals of delicious food, doesn’t mean you can’t make healthy substitutions and healthy choices while still enjoy the savory tastes of your favorite meals!

Getting ready to fill up your plate? Try grabbing a smaller plate. This will help you manage your portion size and will ensure that your eyes are not bigger than your stomach. Before going to any large meal, try and have a small healthy snack before to help fill you up.

Healthy food alternatives are to replace dark meat with white meat, for dark meat has twice the amount of fat as well as 40 percent more calories. In addition, try and replace pasta and white bread with whole wheat alternatives. You can also replace dips with alternatives such as low fat yogurts and cottage cheese as well as potatoes with healthier alternatives such as sweet potatoes.

Try exercising during the day if you know you are going to eat a large meal, as well as make sure you drink a glass of water at least 20 minutes before a meal. Many times, your body can confuse hunger with thirst, so make sure you stay hydrated and healthy this holiday season!

Stretching Benefits

Just like warming up your car before a ride, your body needs to be warmed up before activity. Especially during these cold winter months it is imperative your body is prepared for any strenuous activity. Some of the leading causes of injury during the next few months will be due to shoveling, and mainly because people did not prepare their body. Muscles are not stretched and therefore strained because they are cold and tight.

Stretching may seem unnecessary and may be tedious or mundane but there are many benefits to it. Besides preventing injury, stretching reduces muscle soreness after exercise by increasing blood flow to the area. Stretching can increase your flexibility and therefore your range of motion, which can benefit you in sports or activities you enjoy, like catching a football. I’m sure Odell Beckham Jr. stretched his arm before making that impressive one-handed catch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6dtSPyYvCs.

Although stretching is important, there is a wrong way to stretch! When your muscles are cold, they are also tight. When you go to pull on them and stretch you may possibly do more harm than good. Yes, it is important to stretch either before or after a workout. However, your muscles shouldn’t be ice cold before tugging on them. If you are this cold it is recommended you start a warm up with a light walk or jog to get your body temperature up before stretching.

In general, exercise and stretching make you better at what you like to do. You wouldn’t rev your engine immediately after getting into a freezing car so why push your body before it’s ready? Next time you warm up your engine use that as a reminder to warm up your own engine as well.

Exercise and Arthritis

Arthritis is common cause of aches and pains in joints and is not just for those of old age. According to the Arthritis Foundation, two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65, including 300,000 children. With the cold weather setting in, those who are less active during the winter months experience more flare-ups of inflammation than those who continue to perform mild to moderate exercise.

Those with arthritis tend to think that they can’t exercise, but it’s just the opposite. Performing low-impact aerobic movements will enhance your range of motion. Gentle exercise and frequent movement can help relieve joint pain. Mild exercise in the evening can help you feel less still in the morning. Try to avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time throughout the day. Changing your position frequently, getting up and walking around for a half-hour, and periodic stretching can help relieve symptoms.

This diseases can take many forms. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, and is a progressive disease where the cartilage in the joints slowly breaks down. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease where the membranes of the joint are inflamed and cause pain, stiffness, and can lead to severe joint damage. Juvenile Arthritis (JA) is a term that incorporates several autoimmune and inflammatory disorders that can develop in children under the age of 16. Discuss your symptoms with your healthcare providers and ask what can be done to help relieve your pain.

Preventing Heel Pain

Heel Pain? We have just the solution. Heel pain is commonly caused by a condition called plantar fasciitis, sometimes referred to as heel spur syndrome.

Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation of a band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toe of your foot. When this band is irritated it becomes inflamed; therefore, it results in pain. The main cause of this pain is from faulty structure of the foot, especially those with problems with their arches. Also, wearing non-supportive footwear on hard, flat surfaces can lead to plantar fasciitis.

These pains can be very uncomfortable and can lead to permanent damage if not taken care of. Before you consider surgery, there are a guidelines to follow that may treat the pain. Stretching the calf muscles helps to strengthen the muscles connected to the heel and will help ease the pain.

It is important that you avoid walking around barefoot as well; walking without shoes puts unnecessary stress on your plantar fascia. You should also avoid wearing shoes without an arch; wearing shoes that have good arch support helps to reduce the stress on the heel. In order to keep any inflammation down, it is vital that you ice the heel a few times a day as well.

Follow these simple guidelines and you will be sure to see some results.
