Holiday stress

‘Tis the season to be jolly...since when? Holidays are wonderful when you look back at the memories that are shared, but the chaos can fill us with stress and depression rather than happiness and joy. Between thinking of gifts, checking if your bank account can provide the gifts, and dealing with your hectic family reunion, how do you keep your sanity?

Stress is a natural part of life and is difficult to figure out because it means something different to everyone. When a person is stressed out, it is difficult to stop and regroup. The best way to stop the stress is to eliminate it to begin with. You may feel physical strain this holiday seasons because the body works together as a system. What may affect your mental health will also trigger a physical stressor. It is beneficial to determine your tolerance level for stress and to do your best in changing a stressful situation whenever possible this holiday season.

First, plan ahead. Do things the old fashion way—sit down, clear your mind, and see what should be done first. The more difficult tasks should be at the top of your priority as they are most likely causing you the most stress. Use your imagination and picture how things will play out. Create backup plans. It is key to be realistic. The holidays don’t have to be perfect as families change and grow and traditions and rituals change.

Taking on more responsibility than you can or should handle can also cause you stress. It’s okay to ask for help.  If a holiday dinner is what is driving you insane, ask some family members if they are able to prepare a portion of a meal. If finances are a problem, it is best to save ahead of time. If you have not started to do so, try finding sales. There are always loopholes and by exploiting them you can have a less stressful holiday season.

When to seek the help of a physical therapist

Are daily activities becoming tiresome and difficult to manage? Has pain or discomfort become a normal feeling on a day-to-day basis? Do simple tasks such as taking off you shoes or walking up the stairs hurt your joints? If so, it might be time to seek help from a physical therapist.

Physical therapists are highly trained and educated healthcare professionals who help patients reduce pain and improve and restore mobility. Physical therapists are able to assist your recovery both before and after surgery as well as teach their patients how to prevent or manage the symptoms of their condition in order to achieve long-term health benefits while also showing you alternate techniques to pain management without the use of medication or surgery. With each visit to the physical therapist, his or her goal is to promote movement, reduce pain, and restore function to the problematic area using a well-organized fitness program designed specifically for you in order to achieve a much more healthy and active lifestyle.

Knowing if and when you should seek a physical therapist is often tricky. If you are experiencing pain that will not go away in a joint or muscle and it persists longer than a few days, it may be in your best interest to seek the help of a physical therapist. If pain is recurring even after you think it has “passed”, a visit will not hurt as it is better to be safe than sorry. If you have been through a traumatic event, such as slipping down the stairs, problems may still persist and it would be in your best interest to seek the help of a physical therapist. If medication no longer temporarily helps the pain, you may be experiencing a more chronic problem, it may also be a good time to seek therapy. Lastly, if you see visible changes such as swelling around the injured joint, a physical therapist is the person to contact.

If these pains continue when doing basic activities a physical therapist can help determine the cause for your pain and guide you on the right path. Pushing past a pain will not benefit you in the long term but rather subside and will eventually surface again with possibly a more severe problem.

Beating Holiday Stress

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, they said. All your troubles will be out of sight, they said. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m beginning to feel fa-la-la-la-lethargic. In reality, the over-commercialized holiday season has become a point of stress for most of us. Whether it is the stress of shopping in an overcrowded mall in an attempt to find the perfect gifts for our loved ones, feeling overwhelmed by all the holiday festivities you are required to attend, or because the year is coming to a close and you didn’t accomplish what you hoped, the pressure of the holidays can get to all of us in a number of different ways.

The truth of the matter is we put unrealistic expectations on ourselves and are spreading ourselves thin in an attempt to spread holiday cheer, although “thin” isn’t exactly how we’re feeling after all the overeating we do at our holiday festivities. The list of stressors goes on and on, but what we really want to know is how do we cope with the stress and anxiety associated with the holiday blues?

The best offense is a good defense

When it comes to managing holiday stress it is best to go into the season with a game plan. Be sure to budget not only your money, but your time.

Shopping

There are a number of ways to cut down on shopping stress. When it comes to spending money, it is always wise to make a budget. Figure out who you are buying gifts for this season and how much money you are looking to spend on each person. Try not to beat yourself up if you go a little over budget, after all, ‘tis the season.
It can be overwhelming shopping in an overcrowded mall. Online shopping can be a good remedy for this stress. Who wouldn’t prefer to knock out the bulk of their shopping from the comfort of their own home? It can be less time consuming and allows you to the opportunity to multi-task.
Suggest organizing a Secret Santa or Grab Bag with your friends to help cut back on spending.

Festivities

Holiday parties can be fun and festive with good eats and drinks, but sometimes during the holiday season the number of parties we are required to attend can be overwhelming. Remember, it is okay to say no sometimes. Chances are you are not the only one feeling the heat because of the number of festivities you have on your plate.
If you think attending parties are stressful, imagine hosting one. The host is a stressful task no matter the time of year, which is why recruiting close friends and family to help with the planning, shopping, set up and management of the party is crucial. Never be a afraid to ask for help as delegating responsibilities will do wonders for decreasing stress.

Family

‘Tis the season for families to come together in celebration with peace, love, and harmony. However, not all families are the Brady Bunch. No one knows how to get under your skin like family. Whether it be frustration from pointed comments or lingering tension with another family member, keeping your composure is the best and sometimes only way to cope. Despite the anxieties you may be feeling from a family reunion, there is a time and place for these things to be discussed and it is not over a Thanksgiving turkey. Family is family and nobody is perfect. It is much easier to keep an open mind and heart and accept people for who they are, especially during this time of year.

Happy New Year?

Another year is coming to a close and maybe you have not accomplished what you  hoped. Perhaps you didn’t reach your weight loss goal, or maybe you didn’t get the promotion you wanted or your love life is lacking. Life is not as neatly packaged as the presents we wrap at this time of year and it doesn’t always go according to schedule. Remember that you are only human and it is unhealthy to put so much pressure on yourself to be perfect and have a perfect holiday season. Life isn’t perfect. Adapt. A new you year is upon us, so regroup, reframe, and do your best.
Good luck this holiday season keeping your stress levels down. It is important not only for your sanity but for your body and overall wellbeing. Happy Holidays!

National Influenza Vaccination Week

We have officially turned the calendar to December. Colder weather, including snow, is on the horizon, meaning we will have some beautiful scenery and some tough commutes! Along with the change from fall to winter, however, comes a greater chance of getting sick. December is a month in which individuals should take the initiative to stay healthy, and from the 6th until the 12th of the month, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention encourages everyone to participate in National Influenza Week.
The influenza vaccine has received some criticism in recent years but the fact remains that it provides many health benefits. The vaccine is also known as a flu shot, and is an annual vaccination in which a low strain of different viruses are exposed to your immune system in order to strengthen resistance to the infection. An annual flu shot is necessary to protect you fully as the body’s immunity to vaccines declines and the influenza virus continuously changes due to mutations.

The most common question regarding the influenza vaccine is if it is necessary. Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and possibly death, and the best way to reduce the chances of being susceptible to the virus is to get the shot each season. The virus will spread less through the community if more people decided to get the flu shot.

Influenza vaccines will prompt the body to create antibodies to help aid the immune system two weeks after you get the shot. Feeling sick for a few days simply means that your body is reacting to the foreign substance and is therefore lessening the chances of catching the virus again. Influenza vaccinations are available as early as October, although the most common outbreaks occur during the months of December and January.

The first step in staying active and keeping your body physically fit is staying healthy.  The flu shot is offered at doctors’ offices, health clinics, pharmacies, and college health centers, so you can still get the vaccine even if you do not have a regular doctor. Consider receiving the influenza vaccine if you are serious about protecting yourself from getting sick.

Have you considered physical therapy or have you already made your first appointment? Congratulations on beginning this next chapter of wellness in your life! It should be your top priority to get back to normal whether you’ve suffered from chronic pain for a portion of your life or you have had a sudden accident causing injury.
Your first appointment will be highly informational for both you and your physical therapist. Through a series of tests such as postural and movement analysis and strategic palpation of the affected muscles and joints, your physical therapist will be able to formulate a personalized action plan for your success.
The first visit to the physical therapist will in many cases be your first therapy session. Don’t forget to bring your insurance card or any paperwork from your doctor and be sure to wear comfortable clothing as your therapist will need you to have full range of motion. A typical physical therapy session will last around 45 minutes.
The physical therapist may prescribe you exercises to be performed at home in addition to exercises he or she will assist you with during a session. It is crucial to follow this routine as it will help further your progress as well as help with pain relief. The physical therapist will monitor and record your progress each session in order to fine tune your treatment plan and to make sure you are receiving the best treatment for your ailment.

Basketball Injuries

As we get into the full swing of basketball season, players must be wary of injuries on and off the court affecting your game. Whether it is a pickup game on the neighborhood court or an organized league in a crowded gymnasium, millions of men and women who play basketball each year are at risk for a wide range of injuries.

According to a study by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), 22% of all male basketball players sustained an injury last year, with 42% of the injuries were to the ankle or the foot. Sprains were the most common types of injuries followed by injuries to the hip, thigh, and knee. Perhaps the most alarming statistic, however, is 60% of these injuries occurred during practice and 59% during the second half of a game.

These statistics prove warming up through proper stretching and building up endurance to prevent fatigue is the most important factor in preventing basketball injuries. Basketball is a fast-paced, physical sport, and maintaining a high level of fitness is optimal in preventing injuries.
The offseason is usually the most important part of your training regimen for the season. A physical therapist can help you maintain a proper fitness program made up of strength training, flexibility, and aerobic exercise. Athletes who are out of shape are more likely to sustain and less likely to recover from an injury. It is also required to get a yearly physical examination and to follow any recommendations your doctor may have.

Warming up is also another major factor in preventing an injury when playing basketball. Dynamic stretches should be done before a game or practice and static stretches should be done as a cool-down afterward. Keep yourself hydrated throughout a game and make sure you wear proper basketball shoes with skid-resistant soles. It may also be beneficial to wear other equipment, including a mouthguard, ankle supports, and knee and elbow pads.

If you are injured during a game or practice, a physical therapist can help you get back on the hardwood as quickly as possible. He or she can help you recover from common basketball injuries such as ankle and knee sprains, jammed fingers, and stress factors, and many more! Although some sports injuries are not 100% preventable, you can decrease your risk of a season-ending injury by following these basic prevention methods.

Prevention of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that nearly one in five American women over 50 and one in twenty American men over 50 live with. Osteoporosis is the loss of bone density and mobility which can increase the likelihood of bone breakage in everyday situations.
Although bone loss, especially in women, is partially unavoidable due to hormonal changes, there are a multitude of lifestyle changes that can help prevent this life-altering condition. One of the biggest ways you can prevent osteoporosis is by maintaining a balanced diet including leafy greens, protein, and calcium as these are critical to keeping bones healthy.

If you are unsure about how much calcium is in your regular diet, ask your doctor or utilize food tracking phone apps to monitor your macronutrients. Apps like MyFitnessPal will provide you with information on the nutrients you are getting in your current diet. If you see you are lacking in calcium, modifying your diet will be beneficial as your body absorbs calcium optimally through food. An alternative is to incorporate a calcium supplement into your diet.

Calcium absorption in the body is not effective without Vitamin D, which aids in signaling the need to store calcium. Calcium is excreted rather than stored in its absence. The best source of Vitamin D is generated in the skin when in contact with sunlight. It only takes approximately twenty minutes of SPF-protected sun contact to give your body enough Vitamin D to absorb calcium. Other sources of Vitamin D include fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, or mackerel, egg yolks, beef liver, cod liver oil, and Vitamin D enriched milk or orange juice.

Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol in excess is also linked to bone loss as both impede the natural process in maintaining and growing bone mass. Staying physically active throughout your life also prevents bone loss. Activities such as walking, running, and dancing keep your muscles and bones strong. Bones at maximum density are optimal as you go through the aging process.
Osteoporosis is a serious, life-threatening condition, and although some bone loss naturally occurs as you age, taking a proactive approach now will reduce your likelihood of developing the condition it in the future.

Joint Replacement

Has a doctor recommended joint replacement surgery? You are not alone. Joint replacements have become more common as more than one million Americans have had their hips or knees replaced each year. Joints can be damaged by arthritis as well as other diseases or injuries. As you gets older, more bone and joint problems occur. A doctor may suggest joint replacement to improve quality of life as it may help you move around and relieve pain you may be pushing through. Some common knowledge may help you decide if you would like to follow through with the surgery.

Joints are where two or more bones are able to connect together. An example of a joint would be located at the knee, hip, or shoulder. Joint replacement surgery is a process in which a damaged joint is removed and a new joint is inserted. Joints become a problem when they are damaged as it can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling. Since bone tissues are alive, proper blood flow is needed to allow themselves to repair.

New joints are inserted in a way that your bone is able to grow into it. For the elderly, joints are cemented because they have “weak” bones. Uncemented joints are recommended for younger, more active people who have fairly good quality bones. Replaced joints last for approximately 10-15 years.
It is advised you seek medical help if you are in constant pain as only a doctor is able to tell if a joint replacement is necessary. Exams may need to be taken to identify any damage in the joints. After an examination of your joints, a doctor may recommend exercises, physical therapy, or medication dependent on the severity of the joint damage. During the joint replacement surgery, the patient will be given anesthesia to block out nerve receptors enabling them to feel pain. The damaged joint is replaced with plastic or metal and the duration of the surgery is dependent on each individual.

Physical therapy is the most effective treatment after joint surgery. Physical therapy uses a physical method as a long lasting way to relieve pain as opposed to medication that may settle the pain for a short time only to return a few hours later. Physical therapy is often followed by the joint surgery and it is used to help strengthen muscles around the new joint and assist in your ability to regain motion.

Understanding Incontinence

Incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder control—a symptom caused by everyday habits or an underlying medical condition. Incontinence affects over 33 million people each year and many more cases go unreported. Aging, pregnancy, and prostate problems are the most common causes of urinary incontinence. Obesity and overall poor health can also increase the risk and exacerbate underlying symptoms.
There are four types of incontinence: urge incontinence, stress incontinence, overflow incontinence, and functional incontinence.
Urge incontinence, also known as an overactive bladder (OAB), is the frequent need to urinate throughout the entire day, and becomes more common with advancing age. The cause of OAB is unclear but it can be managed through exercises and a change of lifestyle.
Stress incontinence occurs due to insufficient strength of the closure of the bladder. The changes women experience from pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause are the leading causes of stress incontinence. The lower estrogen levels from menopause can lead to lower muscle pressure around the urethra and increase the chances of incontinence. Some remedies for stress incontinence include losing weight, performing kegel and pelvic floor exercises, and by drinking less caffeine and carbonated beverages.

Overflow incontinence occurs when a person has blockage of the bladder outlet or when the detrusor urinary muscle cannot empty the bladder normally. An enlarged prostate in men is the most common cause of overflow incontinence, but other causes may include a blocked urethra (e.g.: kidney stones), nerve damage, and certain medications. Treatment may be difficult and may require surgery.
The final type is functional incontinence, which is when a person is aware they must urinate but cannot due to physical or degenerative conditions such as dementia. Functional incontinence is common in elderly people as these conditions develop as one ages.

Enuresis refers to incontinence in children and includes nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting), diurnal enuresis (daytime wetting), and mixed enuresis, the combination of wetting both during the day and at night. The causes of enuresis include slower physical development, anxiety, and sleep apnea.
There are many treatments for incontinence, including behavioral changes, medication, surgery, and pelvic exercises. A physical therapist can assist you with an anti-incontinence exercise routine in order to strengthen the pelvic muscles, using biofeedback, or through electrical stimulation.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia
Did you know that fibromyalgia affects approximately 4.5 million Americans? Fibromyalgia does not have a known specific cause or cure. Symptoms include chronic widespread pain throughout multiple areas of the body over a long period of time, including headaches as well as general fatigue and attention focusing issues.

Causes are linked to physical trauma, infection, and/or genetics, however no clear connection has been made. The actual pain is caused by an abnormal increase of the neurotransmitters that signal pain as well as the increased sensitivity in the brain’s pain receptors.

There is no cure for this disorder but there are activities that can increase comfort. Pain medication can take the edge off vastly but often a change in lifestyle factors will have the greatest effect. A healthy diet and good sleep habits will help ease issues with fatigue. Maintaining a good sleep schedule will reduce the “fibro-fog” you may feel and eating well will keep your mind as sharp as possible.
One of the best ways to see results is through exercise. Although sometimes painful, exercise can help ease your pain over time due to the release of endorphins, combating the increase in neurotransmitters and causing less pain. Depending on your condition, certain exercises might be more beneficial than others. There are many different methods to ease pain but patients find walking and swimming to be the most helpful.

Because of the nature of this disorder, it is important to enlist the help of a professional before embarking on a daily fitness routine. A physical therapist can examine your body conditions in order to determine the best course of treatment for you. A safe and effective treatment is crucial to a long term coping plan for this disorder.

Cross Country Injuries

Cross Country Injuries

Cross country running is a rewarding but strenuous sport that can often lead to a number of injuries. The extremely long distances covered and the variety of running surfaces are just some of the factors that can wreck havoc on a cross country runner’s body. The sport is well loved by people all over the world so it is important to stay safe by taking certain precautions in order to decrease the likelihood of a running related injury.

There are many common injuries linked to cross country running, including shin splints, ankle sprains, blisters, runner’s knee, plantar fasciitis, side stitches, chafing, and pulled muscles. These injuries can be devastating to those who have a love for both cross country and running in general. The easiest way to prevent injury is to make sure you never push yourself too hard and also to know and respect your limits when it comes to running.

A good warm up is always a good idea before you start a serious run. Stretching and cardio exercises will prepare your body for what is about to come and will help to prevent serious injury. Getting your muscles active will decrease the chance of strains and pulls while running. A cool down is also effective as it is not advised to completely stop your body after strenuous activity.
Possessing good running form helps to avoid injuries such as shin splints and backaches and will also help in injury prevention as many running injuries are developed over time. If you would like to improve your running abilities, a visit to a trained physical therapist can be your solution as they are often able to identify and correct any biomechanical flaws in your form. In order to be the best runner you can be, remember to never push yourself too hard and give yourself time to recover as injury prevention is essential to keeping your body in shape.

Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a common disorder of the endocrine system caused when the body is unable to produce or respond to the effects of insulin. Diabetes, as it is commonly shortened to, affects an estimated 387 million people worldwide and over 25 million people each year in the United States alone. Insulin is one of the main hormones regulating blood sugar levels and is used to convert glucose into energy for the body. The three types of diabetes, type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes, all involve the bodies ability to produce insulin as well as its ability to properly regulate blood-sugar levels.

Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, occurs because the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system. The onset of type 1 diabetes is sudden and mostly occurs in children under the age of 20. A person diagnosed with type 1 diabetes must take a daily insulin shot and make sure they take good care of their feet. Type 1 diabetes can be accompanied by unpredictable blood-sugar levels as well as diabetic ketoacidosis.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and is due primarily to genetics and lifestyle factors. The body is able to produce insulin, but it may decrease over time as the pancreas either does not produce enough insulin or the body fails to recognize it. Type 2 diabetes is caused by obesity, not getting enough physical exercise, using tobacco, and having an unhealthy diet. If diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it can be controlled through exercise and a healthy diet or through medication, and doctors may be able to detect high sugar levels before it turns into diabetes.

Gestational diabetes occurs in about 4% of all pregnancies and is due to hormonal changes affecting insulin’s ability to function properly. Pregnant women at risk of developing gestational diabetes can be due to genetics, race, age, and body weight. While blood-sugar levels tend to go down within six weeks of childbirth, untreated gestational diabetes can cause issues in the mother and child during pregnancies.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include increased thirst hunger and thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, and frequent urination. These symptoms can appear quickly and be debilitating. Type 2 diabetes can show the above symptoms or none at all. Diabetes cannot be cured but it can be controlled through exercise and a proper diet as well as maintaining cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood pressure levels at normal.
A doctor or physical therapist can help you control your diabetes as well as prescribe you a proper exercise routine to keep your diabetes under control.

Plica Syndrome

Plica syndrome (also commonly referred to as synovial plica syndrome) is a condition which occurs when the tissue of the inner lining of the knee joint becomes irritated. Synovial is a type of tissue surrounding a joint and is a normal structure found in many knees. However, the synovial plica are more prominent in some people depending on how much they shrunk during fetal development. For some, larger plica syndrome can be more prone to irritation, usually due to repetitive friction. The more irritated the knee gets, the larger the plica tissue grows, resulting in pain.

The effects of plica syndrome cause tenderness and pain in the front of the knee and on the side of the knee cap. There is a “catching” or “snapping” sensation that is associated with the diagnosis of plica syndrome when bending the knee. The synovial tissue is there to help make the normal fluid that lubricates the joint. The normal movement of the knee becomes affected when the tissue becomes irritated. After this point, the more the knee is used for activities, the thicker the tissue grows and the more pain that is experienced.

Luckily, plica syndrome is not usually a serious condition. The recommended treatment for the plica is simply rest. Staying off the knee and not participating in any serious physical activity allows the inflammation to subside. On top of rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications are usually helpful in aiding a speedy recovery. In serious cases, injection of cortisone or even surgery might be required.

If plica syndrome becomes a reoccurring problem, physical therapy should be considered before surgery. Physical therapy can be utilized to stretch and strengthen muscles and soft tissues around the knee. Programs are usually initiated that include timed ice application, iontophoresis, and ultrasound and controlled exercises are a great way to learn safe ways to move your body in order to keep your knees healthy. Your physical therapist will also develop an individualized routine with you to improve muscular strength and reduce irritation.

Torn Meniscus

A torn meniscus is a serious injury occurring frequently in athletes and even more frequently in those over the age of 65. The tear is caused by a sharp, sudden twisting movement at the knee joint. Even though a meniscus tear can be extremely painful, there are many options other than surgery depending on the nature of the tear.

The meniscus usually refers to the cartilage in the knee joint located between the femur and tibia bones. When a sudden twist, abrupt stop of motion, or deep squatting occurs at the knee joint, a tear might occur. Depending on the location of the tear, the body may be unable to repair itself. As your body ages, blood circulation at the knee begins to decrease as well as the increase of degeneration. Almost half of all people over 65 have a torn meniscus to some degree, but for many there are no symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms, it is extremely important you take action before they get worse.

If you are still able to walk and your knee isn’t “locking up”, physical therapy, rest and R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) may be your solution. Before you attempt any exercises or strained movements, it is imperative that you visit your doctor or physical therapist. A doctor will most likely refer you to physical therapy in order to prevent the meniscus tear from worsening.

A physical therapist will be able to access your injury and work with you through personalized exercise and movement routine. This program will allow your knee to be rehabilitated properly and safely. The physical therapist will provide you with exercises to do at home to help ease your pain as well as help keep your progress going. In addition, the physical therapist will teach you safe movement practices that will help prevent this injury from occurring again in the future.

For many, however, surgery is necessary to repair the damage to the meniscus. During the rehabilitation process, physical therapy will be just as integral to rebuilding motion as well as lifestyle training to avoid re-injury in the future.

National Physical Therapy Month 2015

October is National Physical Therapy Month! This time of the year is the perfect opportunity to thank the physical therapists in our lives that have helped us increase both mobility and quality of life. It is also the perfect time to raise awareness to the importance of physical therapy for rehabilitation and wellness in our communities.

Physical therapy is a practice that existed for many centuries before becoming a formalized medical speciality in the early twentieth century. Physical therapy changes the lives of millions of Americans each year by providing one-on-one care for those with traumatic injuries and bodily conditions, including arthritis, chronic headaches and others. Physical therapists utilize methods such as therapeutic exercises, electrotherapy, massage, and mobilization in order to help their patients with pain management as well as ensuring safe mobility.

A physical therapist will examine the condition of each patient by injury and lifestyle factors in order to provide a personalized routine. He or she will then implement this routine with the patient as well as provide them with at-home exercises in order to continue progress outside of the office. Combined with at-home and in-office exercises, patients notice a positive change in their pain management and mobility. Avoiding painful surgery is as simple as continued practice of these exercises for many.

Physical therapy can be beneficial if you or someone you know as it can help ease chronic pain, improve range of motion, and prevent future injuries. A physical therapist will teach you proper movement in order to avoid any further damage.

How Physical Therapy Can Help Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition involving the inflammation of the joints which affects millions of people on a day-to-day basis. This uncomfortable and painful disease unfortunately has no cure, but can be made more manageable through specific treatments.

Physical therapy is a popular method for pain reduction. A physical therapist will work with you based on the extent of your arthritis, your level of pain or stiffness, and your work and lifestyle in order to provide a personalized movement plan.

It is important that you seek the advice of a certified medical professional before starting an exercise program. Due to the nature of joint inflammation, a self-prescribed program can cause the inflammation to get worse and in effect cause even more pain.

A physical therapist will perform exercises and activities during your session that will reduce discomfort caused by joint inflammation. He or she will also provide you with specific exercises helping you continue your progress at home. It is important to follow your physical therapist’s advice and treatment plan as you will get maximum results by repeating the movements as directed.

Based on the information you give your physical therapist regarding your work and home environment, he or she can also provide you with recommendations that will improve your quality of life, such as specific pillows and chairs, that can hopefully reduce the number of flare ups.

A physical therapist can also help guide you through making the safest movements for your specific joint conditions. Activities such as walking, bending, and sitting, if done incorrectly, can cause even more pain.

Although it is unfortunate that arthritis has no cure, taking the steps towards pain management can have a huge effect on your day to day activities. By working with a physical therapist, you will increase your range of motion, reduce stiffness and pain, and increase your quality of life!
